CHARRED LIFE

Jharia, home to one of India’s largest coal deposits, has more underground fires than any other place in the world. Burning coalfields cause the ground to crack spit noxious gases and eventually collapse. Life around these infernos is bleak; People stay in their crumbling houses and continue to breathe toxic fumes in order to be closer to their work. Life depends on working in the mines or scavenging coal. In Jharia, coal is the reason to live and the reason to die.
